Juno award winner kicks off monthly Calypso gathering

Scarborough resident John “Jayson” Perez, who was the first and only Canadian calypso artist ever to win a Juno award, will help kick off a new monthly gathering celebrating calypso music in Scarborough.

The gatherings will start Sunday, April 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Spice Cafe, 74 Hymus Rd., and continue the last Sunday of the month. Admission is $10.

Dala to lead half million students in song May 7

The Scarborough duo of Dala, which opened for Tom Cochrane and Red Rider during their March national cross-Canada tour, including Massey Hall in Toronto, have one huge gig lined up.

Comprised of former Mary Ward Catholic high school students Sheila Carabine and Amanda Walther, Dala were commissioned to write a special song for the third annual Music Monday, which will be held throughout Canada Monday, May 7.
