If you missed Brenda Carol and ClaireVoyance’s 11th annual four-night run at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival you just might be able to catch it on CD.

The East York jazz singer said the four-night stand, which wrapped up Wednesday at the Hothouse Cafe on Church street, was recorded with a view to eventually releasing another live CD.

Her first live CD was recorded in identical circumstances at the Hothouse Cafe during the Downtown Jazz Festival and garnered good reviews, copping a “CD of the Week” at Jazz Review in the U.S. It was released in 2000.

This time around she said a more sophisticated recording arrangement was used.

Carol along with husband Stephen Gardner are long-time residents of the Woodbine/Danforth area where both run their long-established teaching studio.

Carol, whose self titled studio debut CD from 1998 was also critically acclaimed, has found her way into the World Who’s Who in Jazz, Cabaret, Music and Entertainment, Vol. 1, Showbiz, Pioneers - Best Singers, Musicians, and Entertainers from 1606 to the present, published by the Federation of American Musicians, Singers and Performing Artists (FAMSPA).

Carol and her new ClaireVoyance bassist Jack Zorawski took time out from their rehearsing prior to their festival gig for this interview.

Speaking of new recordings, Zorawski, who is married with two adult children 23 and 19 years of age, has released a new CD this year, First Train, by his trio, which also features Richard Whiteman on piano and Kevin Coady on drums.

It may be called the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival but East Toronto residents won’t have to go downtown to catch an act.

There are several venues east of the Don Valley, including free daily performances at the Tuborg Stage at the Alexander the Great Parkette (Danforth and Logan avenues).

Also presenting a full slate of festival shows are Whistler’s, Ten Feet Tall and the Black Swan Tavern. As well, Lolita’s Lust and the Chinchilla Lounge will host a late night jazz DJ most evenings.

It’s part of what promises to be a jazzy summer in East Toronto with the annual Beaches International Jazz Festival slated to run July 20 to 29.

Here’s a look at the local venues for the Downtown Jazz Festival:

Seldom has giving to charity been so much fun as when you fire up a special fundraising CD put out by Toronto firefighters that has already raised close to $20,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation.

The Burning Love CD, which was actually released in 2005, is comprised entirely of 15 instantly recognizable fire-themed classics that all burned up the charts in their day such as Light My Fire, Burning Down the House and Smoke on the Water, just to name a few.

The idea was sparked by Chris Burrell, who not only grew up in Scarborough, but now also serves as a firefighter in Scarborough at Station 234.

He plays several instruments, including drums and keyboards on the hot CD, which he also produced, recorded and mixed.

Longtime Scarborough resident Johnny Cowell has led a double life – virtuoso trumpet player with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as well as an international chart-topper who paved the way for a generation of future Canadian songwriters.

“Primarily I was a trumpet player – that was the main thing – but I got interested in writing songs and it paid off as good or better than the trumpet,” he said from his house in southeast Scarborough, which he has lived in with wife Joan now for 50 years.
